Biryani Recipe


Biryani is a popular rice dish along the coastal region of Kenya. It is a delicious blend of rice, meat, and various spices. It is rich in starch and proteins. Below is a simple recipe for cooking biryani the coastal way.


  • 2 cups Rice
  • Water
  • Food color orange
  • Cooking oil
  • 500g Meat
  • 2 red onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Maziwa mala/plain yogurt
  • Tomato paste
  • Salt
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Paprika
  • Turmeric

Preparation Procedure

  1. Boil water in a cooking pot
  2. Add salt and orange food color
  3. Add washed rice and allow it to cook until it is soft
  4. Prepare ingredients that is blend tomatoes, chop onions, mash garlic and ginger set them aside
  5. Wash meat properly and boil until it is tender
  6. In a frying pan pour cooking oil and add onions let them cook until they are golden brown
  7. Add mashed garlic and ginger and mix
  8. Add paprika and turmeric powder then add boiled meat and mix
  9. Add blended tomatoes, tomato paste, and maziwa mala/ plain yogurt mix properly
  10. Add salt and allow it to simmer for 5 minutes
  11. Biryani is ready to be served
