Matoke Recipe


Matoke is a tasty dish loved by people in Kisii region of Kenya and Uganda. To make Matoke, you need to peel unripe bananas, then cook them with tomatoes and onions. Matoke is a good source of potassium. It is ideal for both kids and adults.


  • Unripe green bananas
  • Onion
  • Tomatoes
  • Salt
  • Coriander
  • Cooking Oil
  • Green Pepper
  • Water

Preparation Procedure

  1. Peel the green bananas your hands may be a little bit sticky smear some cooking oil on your hands before peeling
  2. Cut them into the size you wish them to be
  3. Wash them and drain the water
  4. Chop all ingredients separately
  5. In medium heat pour cooking oil into a pot
  6. Add chopped onions and stir until they turn golden brown
  7. Add the drained bananas and mix well
  8. Add tomatoes, green pepper, and salt to taste
  9. Mix and allow the tomatoes to cook until they are mashed
  10. Add water and cover
  11. Reduce the heat and cook until they are tender for 20 -30 minutes
  12. Serve them while hot
