Best Maziwa Lala or Mala Brands in Kenya (Fermented Milk)

The taste of Maziwa Mala or Lala (Fermented Milk) depends largely on its brand. We have provided a list of the best processed Mala brands in Kenya that are available in most shops. We have also added homemade fermented milk.

KCC Mala

KCC Mala is one of the best-fermented milk brands in Kenya. Though most people have started to abandon it for Fresha because it has become lighter, it still retains the number one position as the most preferred Maziwa Lala brand in Kenya. It is so popular that the brand name Mala is used in Kenya to refer to fermented milk instead of Maziwa Lala. The 500ml packet costs Ksh. 67.

Fresha Maziwa Lala

Fresha Lala is the best alternative Maziwa Mala brand to KCC in Kenya. The 500ml packet goes for Ksh. 63. It is considered to be smooth and tasty.

Brookside Lala

Brookside Lala comes in two varieties: Natural and Sweetened. If you are looking to eat it with Ugali, then consider the Natural one. It is available in most stores in Nairobi.

Royal Lala

If you have tried KCC Mala or Fresha Lala, and they have not worked for you, then give Royal Lala a try. It comes with a different taste that most people these days prefer. The problem is that it is not available in most parts of the country. You will find it in a few stores in Nairobi.

Kinangop Maziwa Lala

The 500ml Kinangop Lala Milk goes for Ksh. 70. It is most available in shops within Nairobi and Kiambu County. Most Kenyans love it because of its thickness and natural taste.

Homemade Fermented Milk

You can prepare your fermented milk by boiling fresh milk, then letting it cool and adding a little Maziwa Lala to it. Use any of the Maziwa brands listed above to prepare. It can take 6 to 12 hours to be ready, depending on how sour you want it to be.

Homemade Fermented Milk

Other traditional fermented milk varieties in Kenya that you might want to give a try include Mursik (made by Kalenjins) and Maruranu or Maroranu (made by Kisii).

KCC Mala is the best, though its quality has been deteriorating. I also tried Brookside, but its taste cannot beat KCC.
